A pattern of a girl's skirt is provided. You are advised to study the sketches, instructions and layout carefully before you begin the test.

Materials provided

  1. Pattern pieces: A — skirt front; B — skirt back; C — front skirt frill; D — back skirt frill; E — waistband.
  2. Plain lightweight cotton fabric, 60 cm long by 112 cm wide.
  3. Sewing thread to match the fabric.
  4. One large envelope.

The test. Using the materials provided, lay, cut out and make one side of a girl's skirt to show the following processes:
(a) cutting out; (12½ marks)
(b) working of the front and back darts; (10 marks)
(c) joining the skirt side seam using an open seam — do not trim the notches; (16 marks)
(d) joining the frill side seam using an open seam; (8½ marks)
(e) preparing gathers and attaching the frill to the skirt using a plain seam — do not trim the notches; (19 marks)
(f) preparing and attaching the waistband and holding it down with even tacking stitches. (19 marks)

At the end of the examination, firmly sew on your work, on a single fabric, a label bearing your name and index number. Remove the needles and pins from your work. Fold your work neatly and place it in the envelope provided. (5 marks) Do not put scraps of fabric in the envelope. Do not seal the envelope.
